The Australasian Society for the Study of Intellectual Disability is a coalition of regional associations. There are currently seven associations: six located in Australia ( New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria and Western Australia) and a seventh regional association that is New Zealand. Other like minded regional groups that have the support of their members may wish to form additional associations within the ASSID organisation.

Composition of the Board:

The board of ASSID is comprised of representatives from every local association. Every year, regional associations hold an annual general meeting, at which they elect three local members to represent the local association on the Board. Following the election of these members, a further Annual General Meeting is held in which these regional delegates elect the executive positions (President, Vice President, Treasurer, Registrar and Secretary). In addition to these elected representatives, there are a further three positions on the board: the conference convenor for the upcoming annual conference, and two further ex-officio positions - the journal editor and the magazine editor.

Distinguished Service Citations:

Each year, individual members or regional associations can nominate one or more people for a distinguished service citation. These nominations are the reviewed by the board, who determine at the final board meeting the recipient of any award. This award is conferred upon those people who have had a sustained involvement , and who have given much to the organisation. The following is a list (not complete) of recent recipients of this award.

Fellow of ASSID:

Each year, individual members or regional associations can nominate one or more people to recognise an individual's outstanding contribution to the field of intellectual disability.These nominations are the reviewed by a sub-committee of the board, who determine at the final board meeting the recipient of any award. This award is conferred upon those people who have had a sustained involvement , in the field of intellectual disability.
